Procedural Art
Artist Statement - Procedural Work
"If men were able to be convinced that art is precise advance knowledge of how to cope with the psychic and social consequences of the next technology, would they all become artists? Or would they begin a careful translation of new art forms into social navigation charts."
- Marshall McLuhan. Understanding Media. 1964
"Art is the Queen of all sciences, communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world."
- Leonardo da Vinci
The folios on this site represent processes of creating visual representations of data. (mathematics, if you will) but with the intention of a social or emotional dynamic.
The pieces here are a result of procedural generation, through a combination of human inputs, assets and algorithms combined with computer generated randomness.
Here are works that have been created in whole or in part using autonomous systems. (Non-Human)
In his book, DEEP AFFINITIES, Philip Palmedo writes: "Physics strives to understand the compositional harmony between disparate parts of the universe, for instance the forces at work within the atom and in the galaxies. It seeks to paint a picture that involves symmetry and simplicity. Art aspires to the same thing, the representation of life's harmonies, in realistic and in abstract terms, with compositional integrity."
My work here is defined by the modeling of patterns, textures, surface shapes run through mathematical systems which are in and of themselves, creative expressions.
This media synthesis introduces changes in the process of art-making. A.I (Artificial Intelligence) blurs the line between curation and creation. Models change when deterministic parameters are changed and often integrated with a random seed.
Procedural art (defined by a system of rules, relationships and behaviors) enables original works that are flexible and capable of systemic revisions. Often it is not the object or work that is the point, but the process designed to create the work.
With computing tools capable of processing algorithms at high speeds, I am attempting to push the limits of my imagination in new ways.
And yet...
"The nature of reality is this:
It is hidden, and it is hidden, and it is hidden."
- Rumi, 13th-century Sufi Mystic
